Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is believed to have said “even a smile is an act of charity,” but there are some – Muslims – who tend to refute his teaching and hide their faces altogether. Blasphemy I say!
As I follow the recent debate – spurred by French law to ban covering of face in public places – I cannot refrain myself but think about the important aspects that are left out. Which I will discuss later in this article.
I have read many articles – overwhelmingly in favor of burqa – stating the freedom of expression and religion as an excuse to let the women who adhere to this practice continue wearing the burqa (a Pre-Islamic Persian garb that also covers the face). But the matter is not that simple as there are varying views on this issue.
One view is that a burqa is always forced onto the women by the men in the family, thus the practice should be protested and women must be liberated. Majority do believe that burqa should not be forced and wearing it should be the matter of choice. But that is not the case in patriarchal orthodox tribal societies and families. In those societies and families girls are taught from childhood the obligation of Muslim women to cover herself. And so they are mentally forced if not physically.
This misogynous act diminishes women's identity and objectifies her, as she becomes a property of a man to be owned and used. With burqa she disappears and becomes a part of an unidentifiable herd and loses her individuality. There is no clear way of identifying her unless she walks around with a name tag or some sort of a serial or product code. Like the ones used to identify the indistinguishable items in a market. Sorry!
Another argument – which is being left out of the debate – is that women choose to wear the burqa as they feel that men must not see their beauty. This way they can focus on their mental abilities, and be recognized for those rather than their physical appearance. So they are believing that a woman who wears burqa does it to refrain from devilish eyes of the perverted men who want nothing but sex from her. But in a way she objectifies herself, or worse, she creates a new social order in which she believes the men to be of lower strata than her.
She assumes a godlike position, which bars men from viewing her and knowing her identity. She is some how a superior being who can see the men in any - sexual or non sexual - manner. Judge the men and his physical characteristics, and even decide to pick a perfect mate for herself. Who will only be allowed to gaze at what she was hiding from rest of the world. Thus be granted a special privilege.
This sexism promotes a matriarchal society and becomes another way to discriminate and creates an inhumane class system that cannot be justified by say the right of expression or freedom of religion.
Even if burqa is really about the perverted men, from whom the women must protect themselves. Then the debate should be if a burqa really prevents rape or is it causing more frustration within the society. So if the women - with or without burqa - is at the same risk of getting harassed by individuals, then we must look at our laws and their enforcement.
We also need to take an example of western countries, where the women in bare minimum clothes can travel securely but a - fully covered - women in Muslim societies often gets harassed.
So the point being made is that, it is not the act in itself as much as the thought behind the act of hiding ones identity and appearance, which is wrong and absurd. And that must be debated with an open mind.
Ridiculous article.
ReplyDeleteThing is you cant tell me the advantages or disadvantages of burqa. It's a dressing code and I'm the one who's going take decision. Don't MENTALLY FORCE me to do or not to do burqa. IT'S SHOULD BE MY CHOICE!
ReplyDeletei think u must check the rape figures in western society ...the highest is in sweden .....in London a mostly women dont go outside after 20:00 . and than compare these ratios with Muslim countries....
ReplyDeleteburqa n all other religion aspects should be free to choose....but y u dont say this a physical forced when a NUN in church wear scarf ....why u always criticise burqa when Muslim wear it.....if the want it than let them do it ....because this is a free world ...
wtf?!
ReplyDeleteWhat is wrong with this article?
ReplyDeleteFirst, it is all based on your personal opinions with no proof or facts or figures to support the argument.
Second, why is it necessary for you to see and identify each and every women that walks on the street?
Third, it is widely said that pornography objectifies women. Where do you see burqa in that?
Fourth, you are being extremely judgmental about women who wear burqa by assuming that burqa-clad women tend to judge each man as potential husband. How about those females who go into bars dressed in skimpy clothes perusing men for casual sex?
Fifth, "We also need to take an example of western countries, where the women in bare minimum clothes can travel securely"....here is one statistic, 89000 cases of rape in US in 2009. No? how about another one, 13489 cases of rape in UK in 2009. And, oh look, here is another one, 10277 cases of rape in France in 2009. Well, it is apparent that the women over there are very secure.
Lets look at Muslim Countries shall we. In 2009, 183 cases of rape in Oman, 36 in Bahrain and 1189 in Sudan. So yes, the burqa or any form of covering that the women adorns which does not show her body be banned as it is preventing rape.
Sixth, he needs to learn to write.
ReplyDeleteI feel the above article is one sided & ill motivated.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you trying to point out the rape stats in western countries compared to Muslim need to know the reason for it.
ReplyDeleteFor one it is very hard to even prove rape in a muslim country. A woman needs 4 witnesses, how often do you think people rape others with 4 witnesses around. Also in Muslim countries the woman will get blamed for adultery if the rape isn't proven and be punished for it. Even if the rape is proven she will still face more trauma for being raped by her family and society. Also do you really think a rapist will not rape a woman only because of the way she's dressed. A guy knows under that burqa is a woman with a Vagina. A rapist will not sit around and let the covered woman walk by and attack the woman who is revealing some skin. Also you people need to educate yourself on rape because it really has very little to do with sexual pleasure and more to do with taking control and/or hurting someone. Also rape usually happens with someone you know rather than some stranger in a dark alley.
To the person who said the writer is being very judgemental about women who wear burqa. You're being very judgemental about men, thinking they all have no control over themselves and therefore must not look at any woman. Also if that is the case then that means these women get raped by their husbands all the time. Also like the writer explained very well, it is totally unfair that women get to judge men and be as superficial as they like when interacting with men.
why is it necessary to see and identify each women? One for a drivers lisence, if the woman went missing and/died there would be a need to have some sort of record to identify her and find her. If the woman commits a crime, how do you find her to punish her?... the list goes on..
